Mr Alastair Gibson
Alastair Gibson, MRICS (Member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors), has worked at Sotheby's since 1988, initially as a porter, then as a specialist in British, European and Oriental ceramics. He began his career under Lars Tharp, working with Colin Mackay and Julian Thompson. In 1997, he was promoted to the European Valuation Department. In 2000, Mr Gibson was responsible for cataloguing the Mottahedeh Collection in New York and for the last seven years was Director of the London Chinese Ceramics Department. He left Sotheby's at the end of 2007 to follow other business interest in the Oriental ceramics and works of art field.
Mr David Priestley
David Priestley was previously a Director of Sotheby's London and Hong Kong and a respected specialist in Chinese ceramics and works of art.
In 1994, together with Benedicta Ferraro, he established Priestley & Ferraro, which specializes in early Chinese art in St James's, London. Their gallery embraces all of Chinese art from its beginnings in the Neolithic period up to the eve of the Ming dynasty. Their main emphasis is on ceramics - pottery, stoneware and porcelain. They also sell early bronzes and jades, Buddhist sculpture and other Chinese works of art. The ceramics fall broadly into three areas - Song wares, pre-Song wares and pre-Song figures. The Song wares section includes all Song ceramics and porcelain, as well as related wares from the adjacent Jin dynasty and Yuan dynasty. The pre-Song wares section covers all vessels and non-figural objects from the Neolithic through the Han dynasty and Tang dynasty. The pre-Song figures section includes largely Han dynasty and Tang dynasty pottery funerary figures. The gallery’s other two sections are works of art, which covers all other non-sculptural media, including amongst others lacquer, cloisonne, bronze and jade, and sculpture, mostly in stone or wood.
Priestley & Ferraro is a regular participator in Asian Art in London and exhibitor at The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF), Maastricht.
Mr Edmond Chin
Edmond Chin is internationally recognized today as one of the most talented jewellery designers. During the 1990s, Edmond Chin ran the Jewellery and Jade Department at Christie’s Hong Kong and found inspiration for his modern creations from ancient Chinese art. In 2006, he created a diamond butterfly brooch that the government of Singapore presented to the Japanese empress.
Edmond Chin has also donated his magnificent collection of Southeast Asian jewellery to the Asian Civilizations Museum in Singapore. One of the museum’s three Southeast Asian galleries has been named after his proud parents, Mary and Philbert Chin.
Mr Subhash Kapoors
The Kapoor name has long been associated with fine antiquities from India. Mr Subhash Kapoor learnt from his father, Shri Parshotam Ram Kapoor, who settled in Jalandar, Punjab, after the separation of India and Pakistan in 1947. His father moved his gallery to New Delhi in 1962 to facilitate the ever-growing South Asian art market, and sold thousands of items to the museums in India. In 1974 Subhash Kapoor left for New York City and opened his own gallery in 1976 on Madison Avenue and has been in business ever since.
Art of the Past, Inc., specializes in fine antiquities from South, Central and Southeast Asia. The collection ranges in date from the third-millennium BCE to the early twentieth-century. The approximately five thousand items are especially strong in sculptures and paintings. Over the years, the company has expanded its field of interest to other areas such as the decorative arts and contemporary painting. The emphasis of the collection remains on quality, originality of expression and art historical importance.
